That’s why we wanted to tell you about a scam that has been affecting grieving families and equip you with tools to combat this issue.

After looking at online obituaries, scammers call families and pretend to be someone from the funeral home. They then claim that the funeral home needs more money to pay for the loved one’s funeral and instruct families to meet them — not at the funeral home — to exchange the money. This deplorable tactic has cost families thousands of dollars. Learn more about this scam here.

Scammers have been using a new tactic to steal thousands of dollars from families. After looking at the online obituaries and staff pages on funeral home websites, they call families and tell them that the funeral home needs more money to pay for their loved one’s funeral.

Our funeral home will never call you asking for more money! Once you meet with one of our funeral directors, you should know how much your bill will be. If someone calls you, says they’re from our funeral home, and asks for money, please do not give them any money or any of your personal information. Contact us to verify that we did not call you, and notify local law enforcement.

We want to make you aware of a new scam that is targeting grieving families. We haven’t had any issues at our funeral home, but we want to make sure you and your personal information stay safe!

Scammers look at online obituaries and call families who have recently lost a loved one, pretending to be someone from the funeral home. They then say that the funeral home needs more money to serve their family. Often, they set up a meeting place to exchange money.

We will never ask you for money over the phone! When you visit with us and plan for your loved one’s care, we’ll work out your bill and a payment plan with your family, and we won’t call you asking for more money.

If you receive a suspicious call, please follow these steps:

1. Tell the caller that you will call them back.
2. Call the funeral home to verify.
3. Notify local law enforcement.

Never give your debit or credit card information to someone over the phone. Stay vigilant, and please let your friends and family know about this scam so they can stay safe, too.

These individuals pose as funeral directors from the funeral home the family used, then falsely inform families that more funds are needed for the services completed.

We care about our community, so here are a few things we want you to know.

1. A funeral home will never call you after the funeral asking you for more money.

2. A funeral home will give you an exact price before the funeral. You can then decide to pay in full or explore other options.

3. If you receive a suspicious phone call from a funeral home, tell the caller you will call them right back. Then hang up and call the funeral home yourself to verify if what you’ve been told is true.

A new scam has been targeting grieving families across the country, and we want you to be aware and protect yourself!

Scammers are using obituaries from funeral home websites to gather information about families who have recently had a funeral. These individuals then contact these families, pretend to be with the funeral home that did the funeral, and demand more money is needed for the services to be completed. Unsuspecting families that agree to additional payment are then instructed by the scammers to meet them — not at the funeral home — in order to exchange the money.

If you receive a suspicious phone call from a funeral home asking for more money after the funeral, here’s how to find out if the call is a scam.

1. Tell the caller you’ll have to call them back. Hang up and immediately call the funeral home yourself to verify if the call was legitimate or not.

2. Tell the caller you will bring the requested money to the funeral home and meet them there. If the caller does not want to meet you at the funeral home, then there clearly is a problem.

3. Tell the caller you’ll have to call them back. Hang up and call law enforcement to report your suspicion.

And remember, never give your credit card number, social security number, or any other important information over the phone to an unknown caller.
